English as a Second Language

English as a second language subjects address the needs of students seeking to consolidate their English language and communication skills. Study in this area is strategically oriented to the refinement of student skills within an academic environment. In particular, emphasis is placed on effective writing and research techniques and improved fluency and organisation of written and oral presentations.

Several credit subjects on offer are available for students of most faculties although students should consult with a student adviser to confirm that ESL subjects can be credited towards their degree.

ESL subjects, along with Communication Skills subjects, computer skills subjects and subjects that focus on workplace skills, are termed 'skills-based subjects'. Students enrolled in an arts degree may credit a maximum of three skills-based subjects towards their course. Students from other faculties should check for skills subject limitations with a student adviser.

Management

Students undertaking the Bachelor of Arts are permitted to enrol in a range of subjects offered by other faculties, but must complete a minimum of 50 points of first-year subjects in areas of study approved by the Faculty of Arts. See Arts-approved subject requirement for more information.

BA combined course students are not permitted to enrol in these subjects for credit towards the arts component of the combined degree. Please consult a Faculty of Arts course adviser for more information.

Mathematics and Statistics

A major in mathematics and statistics usually requires a minimum of nine 12.5 point subjects, totalling 112.5 points. It comprises:

  • at least two first-year subjects in mathematics and statistics (25 points); and
  • three second-year subjects in mathematics and statistics (37.5 points); and
  • four third-year subjects in mathematics and statistics (50 points)
Students undertaking the Bachelor of Arts are permitted to enrol in a range of subjects offered by other faculties, however students must complete a minimum of 50 points of first-year subjects and 100 points of second/third-year subjects in areas of study approved by the Faculty of Arts.

BA combined course students are not permitted to enrol in these subjects for credit towards the arts component of the degree. Please consult an Arts student adviser for more information

First year: First-year subjects in mathematics and statistics require VCE Mathematical Methods at level 3/4. Students planning to study mathematics or statistics within the Bachelor of Arts degree should read the description of first-year Mathematics subjects to understand the available first-year selections.

Later years: Entry into mathematics and statistics subjects is controlled by a system of prerequisites and corequisites. Students limiting their selection to 12.5 or 25 points in first year mathematics and statistics have limited options in later years, and it is usually preferable for students wishing to pursue substantial studies in mathematics and statistics to select 37.5 or 50 points in mathematics and statistics in first year.

Students majoring in mathematics and statistics have considerable flexibility in choosing their subjects; for example, there are advanced and standard level versions of several subjects in first and second year. Students are encouraged to speak with a mathematics and statistics course adviser to assist in their course planning. The following examples are for illustrative purposes only.

Other first year mathematics subjects may be available. Enrolment is at the discretion of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics.

Modern Greek

Three streams of Modern Greek are offered:

Students at the University of Melbourne are offered an undergraduate program in Modern Greek studies at the Parkville campus in conjunction with the Greek studies program at La Trobe University.

The Modern Greek program combines the study of the Greek language, with particular emphasis on the spoken and written language of contemporary Greece, with the study of Greek literature, history, society and culture. First-year subjects combine these aspects, while later-year subjects provide students with the opportunity to pursue more particular areas of interest.

A major in Modern Greek usually consists of 112.5 points comprising:

  • first-year subjects of Modern Greek (25 points); and
  • second-year subjects of Modern Greek (37.5 points); and
  • third-year subjects of Modern Greek (50 points).

Language Study Streams

Beginners: The beginners stream is available to students with little or no prior knowledge of Modern Greek.

Intermediate: The intermediate stream is usually only available to students who have undertaken four or five years of secondary school Modern Greek or an approved equivalent but not to those who have completed VCE Modern Greek or an equivalent.

Advanced: The advanced stream is only available to students who have obtained at least a pass in VCE Modern Greek or an approved equivalent.

The Greek studies program determines the language stream or level in which a student is to enrol. Placement is based on VCE results, other language study records or a placement test.

Students who commenced study prior to or during 2006 must check the handbook from their first year of study to ensure that they meet the requirements for a major in this area. Students who commenced in 2007 and have completed 37.5 points of Modern Greek the first year of their language stream will usually need to complete 37.5 points at second year and 37.5 at third year to complete a Modern Greek language major.

Music History

Arts students who have a background in music may wish to enrol in any of the four first-year music history subjects. To do so, students must undertake the Faculty of Music Musicianship Test to determine whether they have the musical aptitude to complete the subjects. This test will be held during Orientation, the week before the start of Semester 1, at the Faculty of Music. Students should register for the test with the Faculty of Music prior to Orientation.

The general prerequisite for second and third-year music history subjects is successful completion of two first-year music history subjects (25 points).

A major in music history usually consists of nine 12.5 point subjects totalling 112.5 points. It comprises:

  • two first-year subjects in music history (25 points); and
  • three second-year subjects in music history (37.5 points); and
  • four third-year subjects in music history (50 points).

The major in music history has two structures. Students with no previous musical training commence study in a subject that has no prerequisite requirements and assumes no prior musical knowledge (in 2007, 740-123 Unplugged Music 1100 to 1800). Students who undertake and pass the Faculty of Music Musicianship Test can enrol directly in two of the four core music history subjects in their first year.

    Psychology

A major in psychology consists of 125 points of study comprising:

    • two first-year psychology subjects (25 points); and
    • five compulsory second-year psychology subjects (62.5 points); and
    • two compulsory third-year subjects, and at least one elective third-year subject (37.5 points).

Students should note that they are not required to complete all the second-year subjects in one academic year, however 512-220 Quantitative Methods for Psychology 2 should normally be taken in the second year of a student's sequence in psychology.

The completion of a BA major in psychology does not qualify you to practise as a psychologist in Victoria. Registration is required with the Psychologists Registration Board of Victoria.

To be eligible to register with the Psychologists Registration Board the equivalent of six years of study is required. This comprises an accredited "four-year sequence" in psychology followed by either two years of postgraduate training or supervised experience.

This means that BA graduates who complete the BA with a major in psychology will need to apply for entry to, and successfully complete, fourth-year Honours in psychology to meet the "four-year sequence" requirement, see Honours entry. There are limited places available in the fourth-year Honours program in psychology. Entry is highly competitive.

On successful completion of fourth-year Honours in psychology an additional two years of training and/or experience must be completed before registration with the Psychologists Registration Board of Victoria may be sought.
