Subject Overview:

This subject is a practical introduction to the Portuguese language and to Portuguese and Brazilian culture. Students will acquire the language through a range of activities including language laboratory exercises, computer-aided tasks, role-play in small groups and the study of a wide spectrum of audio, video and written materials.

Assessment: Oral performance including role-play dialogues 10%, aural comprehension and transcription exercises 10%, attendance and participation in classes 10% and oral exam 10%; written work including weekly assignments 20% and four short grammar tests 20%; and one 1.5-hour final exam 20%. Students must pass the end of semester written test in order to pass the subject.
