Subject Overview:

Students in this subject will inquire into a wide range of traditional and contemporary stylistic practices in poetry and poetics. Students will analyse and present discussions on a variety of poetic texts and recent works on poetics, before applying central poetic styles in their own writing. The subject will also involve intensive workshopping of students' own poetry with a specific focus on extending poetic technique and developing and articulating a personal poetic.

Assessment: Poetry equivalent to 3000 words 80% (half due mid-semester, remainder due end of semester), personal poetics paper 1000 words 10% (due end of semester) and a 30-minute class presentation (as scheduled during the semester) and participation in workshops/ exercises 10%. A hurdle requirement of attendance at 80% of seminars/workshops is required in order to submit assessment for this subject and be eligible for a passing grade. Note:Assessment submitted late without an approved formal extension will be penalised at 2% per day. Students who fail to submit up to 2-weeks after the final due date without a formal extension and/or special consideration will receive a fail grade for the piece of assessment.

Breadth Options: This subject is a level 2 or level 3 subject and is not available to new generation degree students as a breadth option in 2008.
This subject or an equivalent will be available as breadth in the future.
Breadth subjects are currently being developed and these existing subject details can be used as guide to the type of options that might be available.
2009 subjects to be offered as breadth will be finalised before re-enrolment for 2009 starts in early October.

Notes:

Students who have completed 760-330 are not eligible to enrol in this subject. This subject is available to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Creative Arts students and may be credited towards a major in Creative Writing in either course.
