Subject Overview:

This subject explores notions of space, place, and architecture in theatre and performance. The architecture and location of theatre buildings, their changing shape through history, and their impact on performance styles will be examined. Conversely, urban and other sites will be analysed for their performative qualities and as spaces that 'perform' culture. Concepts of 'space' in theatre and performance, including physical, mental, textual, and cultural, as well as the articulation of space by light, objects and bodies will be considered. Students will be asked to analyse theatre and other architectural sites, and respond imaginatively to a design task relating space, theatre and architecture.

Assessment: Work equivalent to 4000 words consisting of a research essay of 2000 words 50% (due at the end of semester), a design analysis presented orally and in written form of 750 words 20% (due during the semester), and a collaborative design project to be presented in model, drawing, digital or some other format of 1250 words 30% (due during examination period). There is a hurdle requirement of a minimum 80% attendance. Note:Assessment submitted late without an approved formal extension will be penalised at 2% per day. Students who fail to submit up to 2-weeks after the final due date without a formal extension and/or special consideration will receive a fail grade for the piece of assessment.

Breadth Options: This subject is a level 2 or level 3 subject and is not available to new generation degree students as a breadth option in 2008.
This subject or an equivalent will be available as breadth in the future.

Formerly available as 760-428 Space and Light in Theatre. Students who have completed 760-428 are not eligible to enrol in this subject. This subject is available to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Creative Arts students and may be credited towards a theatre studies major in either course.
