Time Commitment: Contact Hours: 2.5 hours per week. For the first six weeks, a 1-hour lecture and a 1.5-hour tutorial and for the final six weeks a 2.5 hour seminar/workshop.

Subject Overview:

This subject is an introduction to a range of poetic forms. Students will read poetry from various periods and cultures, with an emphasis on 20th century contemporary poetry.

Assessment: 10 to 12 poems or 100-120 lines of poetry 65% (half due mid-semester, remainder due end of semester); 800 word review of one book of poetry 15% (due at the end of semester); attendance at a poetry reading and 500 word report on the reading 10% (due at the end of semester); regular attendance and participation through a verbal presentation of book review and submission of work in progress for workshopping 10% (during the semester). Note:Assessment submitted late without an approved formal extension will be penalised at 2% per day. Students who fail to submit up to 2-weeks after the final due date without a formal extension and/or special consideration will receive a fail grade for the piece of assessment.
Prescribed Texts: Prescribed Texts:A subject reader will be available for purchase.
Breadth Options: This subject is a level 2 or level 3 subject and is not available to new generation degree students as a breadth option in 2008.
This subject or an equivalent will be available as breadth in the future.
Breadth subjects are currently being developed and these existing subject details can be used as guide to the type of options that might be available.
2009 subjects to be offered as breadth will be finalised before re-enrolment for 2009 starts in early October.

Notes:

This subject is available to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Creative Arts students and may be credited towards a major in Creative Writing in either course. Students who have completed 760-205 Poetry are not eligible to enrol in this subject.
