Prerequisites: Chinese 5B for students who commence at Chinese 4a; Modern Chinese Literature, Chinese economic Documents and Chinese Cinema for those who start at Chinese 5A; Modern Chinese Literature, Chinese Economic Documents, Chinese Cinema and Advanced Translation for those students who have completed their secondary education in a Chinese environment

Subject Overview:

This subject is designed to enable students to engage with Chinese language specialised academic research on humanities topics. Disciplines covered may include linguistics, social sciences, literary studies or culture studies. Students will acquire skills in reading academic Chinese and in oral discussions in Chinese on scholarly topics, as well as academic essay writing abilities and skills of analysis and research based on Chinese language academic materials.

Assessment: One essay of 1000 words 25% (due mid-semester), one essay of 2000 words 50% (due in the examination period) and an oral presentation of 20-minutes 25% (due end of semester).

Breadth Options: This subject is a level 2 or level 3 subject and is not available to new generation degree students as a breadth option in 2008.
This subject or an equivalent will be available as breadth in the future.
Breadth subjects are currently being developed and these existing subject details can be used as guide to the type of options that might be available.
