Dr M Kamal & Dr A GullySubject Overview: | This is an introductory subject/unit that exposes students to the basic and fundamental beliefs and practices that constitute the fabric of the Islamic world. Students will be able to explore relationships and differences between the key teachings of Islam and the customary practices of Muslims. In doing so, students will study both unity and diversity in various regions of the Muslim world. Historical and anthropological approaches to studying a number of key institutions and discourses in Muslim societies will also be introduced. |

Assessment: | A group project - designed online in form of a wiki, 20% (completed during semester); online participation, assessed on both quantity and quality, 20% (completed during semester); a research essay of 2000 words, 50%; and tutorial participation: 10%. |

Notes: | This subject will be taught online by the University of Melbourne. It is offered to students of University of Melbourne, University of Western Sydney and Griffith University. Local tutorial support will be available at all three universities. Students who have completed 110-089 Understanding the Muslim World are not eligible to enrol in this subject.
