Course Overview:

The graduate diploma is an introductory course of concentrated language study in Chinese. Students will acquire advanced level language skills and develop an understanding of Chinese culture. The course is an entry point to an articulated structure of higher degree study and may qualify graduates for entry to the postgraduate diploma or professional masters by coursework.

Objectives:

Students who complete the graduate diploma should:

  • acquire reading skills in a range of materials in Chinese;
  • become skilled in translation and synopsis into English;
  • become competent in conversation on everyday matters;
  • speak Chinese with a standard accent;
  • compose and deliver a speech on an assigned topic.
Course Structure & Available Subjects:
  • Students complete subjects consisting of 37.5 points for each of the first two years and 25 credit points for the third year.

Total 100 points - subjects are 12.5 points each, unless indicated otherwise.

  • an undergraduate degree in any discipline.

Notes: Students with higher level language skills may complete in 1 year, or 2 years part-time. This course is designed to be taken over 3 years on a part-time basis.

Students considering higher degree language study are encouraged to consider additional subjects and should seek advise from the course coordinator or a Faculty course adviser regarding an appropriate enrolment.

Candidates with no knowledge of the language will commence at the beginners' level (Introductory Chinese 1A and Spoken Chinese 1A). Those who have completed previous study of the language will normally commence at a higher level, subject to approval by the course coordinator. Candidates with some background in a Chinese dialect will take subjects designed for background speakers (marked with an asterisk).
