Subject Overview:

This subject focuses on aspects of the English sound system. Students gain a detailed understanding of the sound system of different varieties of English. The main topics covered include: phonetic analysis (vowel and consonant systems, phonotactics, stress and intonation) of selected English varieties including L2 varieties of English. Throughout the subject, material is drawn from different varieties of English, and in particular, English spoken by second language learners, to gain an understanding of phonological transfer. This subject also provides the chance for training in the accurate perception and production of English speech, transcription, and basic acoustic phonetic analysis.

  • have developed practical and theoretical language analysis through training in how to use the Phonetic Alphabet as an analytical tool for phonetic analysis of English.
  • have acquired observation and attention to detail through seminar and assignment preparation, and examination revision.
  • have acquired computer literacy through use of IT in acoustic and auditory analyses of spoken language.
  • be able to communicate knowledge intelligibly and economically through tutorial preparation and participation and assignment preparation.

Two transcription assignments equivalent to 2500 words and 50% (due in week 5 and week 11) and one 2500 word assignment (50%),due during the Examination period.
