Time Commitment: Contact Hours: Contact hours are to be determined by the supervisor. Generally, a subject worth 12.5 points should entail between 3 and 6 contact hours per week for a 12-week semester, and a total of about 10-12 hours of study per week, including contact hours. Contact includes lectures, practicals, tutorials, being involved in using University resources to acquire data, bench time, library time, time spent with supervisors and other teaching staff.

Subject Overview: The subject allows students to conduct an original research review, under supervision approved by a subject Coordinator. The content and extent of the project will be determined by a Coordinator, in collaboration with the student. The work may include a review of a body of scientific literature, or a critical evaluation of research or experimental protocols. More rarely, it may involve a small component of an original experiment, or an exploration of a scientific problem.
Objectives:
  1. Demonstrate competence in researching and presenting a literature review on an environmental topic
  2. Distinguish salient features and important trends in published literature and data
Assessment: A written report, in the form of a scientific paper, based on the student’s original work, to be assessed by a person of the supervisor’s choice or the supervisor. Usually, a subject worth 12.5 points should result in a written report of about 3,000 words and no more than 5,000 words. Other parts of the assessment may include a spoken presentation, a research proposal, time schedule, attendance at seminars and workshops.
