Special Research Topics

This subject has the following teaching availabilities in 2016:

Admission to the Graduate Certificate in Arts (Advanced) or Graduate Diploma in Arts (Advanced) in French, German or Italian, or admission to fourth-year Honours in French, German, Italian or Spanish.

170 hours

Students are only permitted to enrol with express written permission of the coordinator.

Students studying French, German, Italian or Spanish at 4th or 5th year are permitted to take this individual reading subject subject to coordinator authorisation to enrol. After consultation with an appropriate member of staff who agrees to act as a supervisor, students wishing to take this subject should submit to the coordinator details of their proposed topic for approval. On completion of the subject students should be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of a particular topic in their chosen language.

On successful completion of this subject, students should:

• be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of a particular topic in Italian, French, German, Spanish or Russian culture and linguistics, and demonstrate the ability to analyse and to report on their reading in a manner appropriate to the methodolgy adopted.

Two 2500 word essays, worth 50% each or equivalent (deadlines to be negotiated with coordinator).

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.

Students who successfully complete this subject should:

• be able to carry out research at an advanced level independently;
• be able to apply theoretical knowledge in the analysis of literary texts or linguistic phenomena;
• cbe able to structure and express clearly complex intellectual arguments.
