Colonialism has profoundly shaped modern political economies, cultures and identities. It has inspired theoretical approaches that examine the enduring legacies of colonialism and attempt to imagine alternatives in an increasingly globalised world. Rather than offer a beginner’s guide, this subject will engage with recent scholarship on colonialism, settler colonialism, postcolonialism, neocolonialism, anti-colonialism and decolonisation, as well as the methodological challenges that these theories pose to practitioners of various ethnic and disciplinary identities. It will offer a comparative perspective on colonialisms of different types, in different times and places, and viewed from the perspective of different disciplines, including anthropology, cultural studies, sociology, political science, philosophy, history, and literary studies. This subject will appeal to students interested in the colonial encounter and its legacies.
