Subject Overview:

The subject will examine selected vocal works from the Italian repertoire with an emphasis on Italian opera. Students will be guided with language coaching in the idiomatic pronunciation of Italian texts, some discussion of context and meaning (if an operatic aria), and dictionary usage for literal translation of texts being prepared for recital.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
• Pronounce Italian song texts accurately and musically with confidence
• Become independent in contextualising and comprehending the meaning of Italian vocal repertoire
• Understand and apply the principles of Italian pronunciation to the vocal repertoire

Assessment:

Active weekly class participation, comprising of weekly preparation of parts, individual and/or sectional practice and active contribution to all rehearsals, classes and performances (30%); a secco recitative and recitation exercise in Week 6 (30%); an end-of-semester test including singing one Italian aria or song accompanied by the piano (40%).
