Subject Overview: This subject examines the cultural variables in nonverbal communication. Topics include bodily stance and gesture, visual semiotics, cultural conventions of visual representation, design and communication, the meaning of fashion and the affective element in visual design.
Objectives: On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
  • understand the range and significance of nonverbal communication;
  • understand the conventions that govern nonverbal communication; analyse the processes of visual signification; and
  • evaluate the effectiveness of examples of nonverbal communication.
Assessment: Essay 1: 1,500 words (40 per cent) due week 7
