Creating Texts

This subject will examine the productive modes of literacy, creating oral, written and visual texts. Intersections between theory and practice will be explored, with a focus on building the professional knowledge and skills needed to enhance student production of a diverse range of textual genres. Topics will include: textual production for learning; thinking and writing; the relationship between textual reception and textual production; types of classroom texts produced; models for teaching writing; teaching oral language; working with and beyond genres or writing and speech; textual theory as a basis for teaching textual production; generating ideas for writing/producing texts; writing as an imaginative activity, crafting texts; writing in multimodal forms; assessing writing.

On completion of this subject, students should be able to :

• Understand the processes involved in creating a range of texts of different kinds;
• Understand and value the connection between writing and exploring ideas;
• Teach towards supporting students in producing the diverse range of texts they need to produce in and out of school;
• Develop teaching strategies to support students in producing texts;
• Determine appropriate criteria for assessing student texts.

Two written assignments, one of 2,000 words, or equivalent, due halfway through the subject (40%), the other a portfolio of writing accompanied by a reflection on the processes involved in producing it, totalling 3,000 words, due approximately two weeks after the last class (60%).

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.

This subject aims to develop skills in

• Understanding, discussing and critiquing academic research;
• Reflecting on how theoretical knowledge can improve their own professional practice;
• Articulating knowledge orally and in writing.
