Note: This is an archived Handbook entry from 2013.

Year and Campus: 2013
Overview:

The DL provides students with the opportunity to gain a Diploma in Indonesian language while completing an undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne. The Diploma is a three-year sequence of first, second- and third-year language study and may add up to one year to the duration of the student’s degree course. Three steams are offered: Beginners, Post VCE and Advanced (students win an Indonesian speaking background).

Indonesian language subjects are organised in a progressive sequence (of units) from Indonesian 1 through to Indonesian 6. Entry and exit points are determined by the student’s background in the language, placement testing, prerequisites, or at the discretion of the Indonesian program. Students normally progress through the subjects in consecutive order. Mid-year entry is also possible into subjects with even numbers, subject to appropriate prior experience and approval from the convernor of the Indonesian program.

See course objectives.

Structure & Available Subjects:

The Diploma consists of a three-year sequence of first-, second- and third-year language study and may add up to one year to the duration of the student’s degree course. See the Diploma course structure for details.

Students study Indonesian as a Diploma through a progression of six language subjects and two electives.

Common entry points for Diploma are as follows:

  • Indonesian 1: Students who have never studied Indonesian before or have only rudimentary knowledge of the language usually enter the progression at Indonesian 1.
  • Indonesian 3: Students who have completed VCE Indonesian (Second Language), Standard IB Indonesian or have an equivalent language level usually enter the progression at Indonesian 3.
  • Indonesian 5: Students who perform at an advanced level in Indonesian, for example those who have completed VCE Indonesian (First Language) or have lived or studied in Indonesia, usually enter at Indonesian 5.

Students will have their appropriate entry point determined by the Indonesian Program, based on evidence of prior learning and/or results of a placement test as required.
