Subject Overview:

This subject provides students with a critical survey of the art of approximately the past twenty years, addressing cultural and technological developments that have been significant throughout this period and examining manifestations of new art in prominent exhibitions and critical publications. The course offers an understanding of the complex nature of contemporary art across the scope of both new and traditional media, and across the range of innovative and retroactive or revisionary artistic practices.

Objectives:

Building on the skills acquired in the previous semester students should be able to communicate in a lucid and persuasive manner, both verbally in class presentations and in writing, their analysis, interpretation and evaluation of contemporary works of art.

Assessment:
  • Tutorial presentation with 1000 word written submission due one week after the presentation (40%).
  • 1500 word essay due during the assessment period (60%).
  • Hurdle Requirement: 80% attendance at both lectures and tutorials is required to pass this subject.
