Time Commitment: Contact Hours: This subject is taught using multimedia teaching techniques and is based around business case studies. There is no face-to-face contact for this subject.
Total Time Commitment: This subject is run over an 8-week period as opposed to a standard 12 week semester subject. It is recommended that students devote 14 hours per week to this subject over 8 weeks.
Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this subject.

Recommended Background Knowledge: Students must be able to perform word processing, use Excel spreadsheets, and have a reasonable understanding of the Internet and the University's Learning Management System.

Subject Overview:

The availability and transfer of information within the whole agribusiness system is rapidly increasing. As a consequence there are both local and global pressures and opportunities for the individual firms within the system. This subject recognises the importance of information as a key resource for a firm's internal decisions and in relation to its competitive position in the agribusiness market place. Harnessing the two-way information flow in an efficient manner is a specialist field that has great scope with the technology that is now available. This subject looks at some conceptual issues of information systems, their structure and management and the technological applications that can provide the tools for good information management.


The objective of this subject is to enable the student to understand and be able to contribute to effective agribusiness decision making in relation to:

  • the critical role of information as a key management resource
  • information flows within the agribusiness system and its firms
  • the application of models of information management
  • the role of technology to manage information
  • the design, installation, on-going management and evaluation of information systems.
Assessment: Individual Assignments, 3000 words (40%), Group Assignments, 4000 words (40%), Online Discussion Participation (20%).
