Time Commitment: Contact Hours: 1 x 1.5 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour tutorial per week and a film screening

Subject Overview:

Themes covered in this subject will include the New Wave in its social context; "auteur" theory; cinematographic language; representations of social change; the postmodern French thriller ("polar"). Students will be responsible for viewing the films in the corpus in their own time. On completion of the subject students should demonstrate familiarity with the practices and theoretical concerns of New Wave and post-New Wave film-makers in France, be able to analyse the social and cultural processes represented in selected films from the period studied, demonstrate an awareness of postmodern film criticism, communicate the results of their research and analysis in both oral and written forms. The subject will be taught in French.

Objectives:
  • demonstrate familiarity with the practices and theoretical concerns of New Wave and post-New Wave film-makers in France,
  • analyse the social and cultural processes represented in selected films from the period studied,
  • demonstrate an awareness of post-modern film criticism.
Assessment:

A 1000-word film analysis 30% (due before mid-semester), a 1000-word class paper 30% (due during the semester) and a 2000-word research essay 40% (due at the end of semester).

This subject has the following hurdle requirements:

  • Regular participation in tutorials is required with a minimum of 75% attendance.
  • All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day and in-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked.
