Subject Overview:

This subject will build on the reading and research skills in French acquired in 116131 French Language and Culture 1A, applying them to two topics: The French Revolution of 1789. the student revolts of 1968. These skills will be further extended into the oral-aural skills required for interviews. Upon completion of the programme, students should have developed greater fluency and accuracy in written and oral work and critical analysis.
Objectives:
  • Work independently in a second language.
  • Develop critical reading skills.
  • Develop their capacity for reading the presupposition and explicit level of written discourse.
  • Be able to deploy strategies for cross-cultural communication in French.
  • Be able to use French to deploy knowledge about France and in particular the background to contemporary political debate.
Assessment:

2 x reading diary + 1 group oral presentation + 2 x 30 minutes written language tests + 1 x 2hour exam.

This subject has the following hurdle requirements:

  • Regular participation in tutorials is required with a minimum of 75% attendance.
  • All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day and in-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked.
