Subject Overview: This subject introduces students to the speech pathology clinical setting including the management of patient presenting for diagnosis and/or treatment. The clinical settings may include hospitals, community clinics, schools, private practices, university clinics, nursing homes and others. A variety of clinical experiences will be offered including observations and hands on experience with infants, children young people and adults throughout the life span. In particular, this subject will cover establishing rapport with clients, interview and history taking, listening and recording information accurately and developing observational skills.
Objectives: On completion of this subject students should demonstrate an understanding of the speech pathology clinical setting and demonstrate they have acquired the following competency based clinical skills:
  • history taking and clinical examination skills
  • the ability to listen and record accurate written information
  • the ability to discuss relevant variables that are affecting the child, patient, family
Assessment:
  • Assessment by Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) in week 1 of the exam period, following Semester 2 – 50%.
  • Students will be expected to demonstrate competency against the Competency Based Occupational Standards (CBOS, 2001) during local and external clinical placements. This will be measured using the Competency Assessment in Speech Pathology (COMPASS). Assessment Booklet and Resource Folder for each clinical placement to be submitted one week after the final day of the clinical placement – 50%.

Hurdle requirements:

  • Students must pass the OSCE and COMPASS assessments in order to pass this subject.
  • 100% attendance and participation at all clinical placements.
