Subject Overview: |
This subject focuses on aspects of the English sound system. Students gain a detailed understanding of the sound system of different varieties of English. The main topics covered include: phonetic analysis (vowel and consonant systems, phonotactics, stress and intonation) of selected English varieties including L2 varieties of English. Throughout the subject, material is drawn from different varieties of English, and in particular, English spoken by second language learners, to gain an understanding of phonological transfer. This subject also provides the chance for training in the accurate perception and production of English speech, transcription, and basic acoustic phonetic analysis. |

Two 1000 word assignments 20% each (due in week 5 and week 10) and one 3000 word assignment 60% (due at the end of the semester). |
