Structure & Available Subjects:

French
The School of Languages and Linguistics offers three streams of French:

  • Beginners: The beginners stream is for students who have very little or no knowledge of French. It is available to students at both first and second year.
  • Intermediate: The intermediate stream is available to students at second-year beginners level and to students who have undertaken four or five years of secondary school French, or its equivalent. It is not available to students who have attempted or completed VCE French.
  • Post-VCE: The post-VCE stream is usually only available to students who have obtained a pass in VCE French, or its equivalent.

The School determines the language stream in which a student is to enrol. Placement is based on VCE results and other language study record. A major in French can be completed through the beginners, intermediate or post-VCE streams.

A major in French consists of 112.5 points usually comprising:

  • first-year subjects in French (25-37.5 points)
  • second-year subjects in French (37.5 points)
  • third-year subjects in French (37.5-50 points)

Students who commenced their degree before 2007 will need to complete 125 points toward this major in order to complete the major. For the specific major structure you must follow, refer to the handbook produced in the year you commenced your degree, available online at http://www.unimelb.edu.au/HB/. Students who commenced in 2007 and have completed 37.5 points of French in the first year of their language stream will usually need to complete 37.5 points at second year and 37.5 at third year to complete a French language major.

Students in all streams will usually select most of their elective subjects from Group A (subjects taught in French) and only one elective subject from Group B (subjects taught in English).
