|Subject Overview:||Advanced Cognition covers a range of topics within the interdisciplinary field of cognitive science. The primary focus of cognitive psychology is to understand thought processes through the use of experimental techniques. The course builds on material and concepts introduced in Cognitive Psychology at the second year level. The lectures take an information-processing perspective of the human brain to show how transformations of information in the brain gives rise to high-level mental functions such as perception, attention, language, memory, thought and consciousness. Tutorials will focus on current theoretically important questions in cognitive science and provide an opportunity for students to develop an understanding of experimental techniques and scientific writing skills. The lecture topics may include models of decision-making, auditory and visual perception, the perception of time, models of attention and memory, language, hallucinations and dreams, and consciousness.|
The subject aims to:
Written work of 3000 words (50%) to be submitted during semester. An examination of no more than two hours (50%) to be completed at the end of semester during the specified University examination period.
Each piece of assessment must be completed (hurdle requirement).
Attendance of at least 80% of the laboratory classes is a hurdle requirement. In case of failure to meet the hurdle requirement, additional work will be required before a passing grade can be awarded.
