Subject Overview:

Students will gain knowledge of the practice of music therapy with adult clients; a knowledge of the theoretical approaches in using music as a therapeutic medium; a comprehensive knowledge of research findings in relation to music therapy methods for adults; and an understanding of the therapeutic processes in providing treatment within the health and psychiatric areas, including rehabilitation and palliative care.

Topics to be covered include principles and processes of music therapy; theoretical basis of the use of music in therapy; the application of music therapy methods in health, psychiatry and rehabilitation clinical treatment programs; and study of research literature.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate extensive knowledge of music therapy research with adult ¬≠clients;

  • critically appraise therapeutic approaches relative to the health needs of adult clients;

  • design music therapy programs for adult clients based on analysis of assessment information; and

  • access current research from international databases, web sites, journals and texts.

Assessment:

One 1500-word assignment (30%); one 3-hour examination (70%)
