This subject examines Australia's changing employment systems in the context of globalisation and the rise of the multi-national enterprise. It focuses on disadvantaged groups. It examines whether workers are treated fairly and analyses their capacity to improve their situation. The course covers issues of contemporary importance and topics may include Aboriginal people, the opportunities for young people, women in the labour market, immigrant workers and trade union organising.
|Objectives:||On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to: |
• Explain the purpose and operations of the contemporary employment relationship, the goals and activities of its principal parties, and the structural and institutional changes that have occurred in recent years;
• Analyse the main theories, models and constructs related to the employment relationship;
• Analyse and synthesise these theories and evaluating their usefulness in explaining different employment systems.
A 3-hour examination (60%) and assignment(s) totalling not more than 4000 words (40%).
