Time Commitment: Contact Hours: 1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 2 hour seminar per week

Subject Overview:

The nineteenth and twentieth centuries in Latin America and Spain have seen the rise and fall of numerous miltary regimes. This course will explore the cultural manifestations of both propaganda of and resistance to several of these dictatorships in Spain and Argentina. In this course we have access to a wide range of primary sources: culinary texts, theatre, the novel, political speeches, music, and film. Our analysis of this material focuses on issues such as writing/performing under censorship, the propaganda of the military regimes themselves.
Objectives:

  • To learn about Spanish and Argentine Military Regimes
  • In the case of Spain and Argentina, to identify the nationalistic tools used by dictators to justify their visions for their nations.
  • In the case of Spain and Argentina, to identify strategies employed by writers to evade censorship.
  • In the case of Spain and Argentina, to discuss issues pertinent to social and cultural dissidence.
Assessment: A mid-semester in-class written test 25% (1 hour). an end of semester written test 25% (1 hour). a 1,500 word essay 40% due in the examination period. tutorial participation 10%.
