Subject Overview: This subject consists of 22 days of practicum placement which has been divided into two components. The first component is a 15 day placement in an approved special education or inclusive setting. The student will have the opportunity to observe and participate in classroom practice; to attend program planning meetings and support group meetings; individual family support plans. The second component consists of 7 professional enhancement workshops which are conducted within academic subjects that are designed to support the professional practice experience. Students who are seeking registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching are required to undergo their placement within a school-based program.
Objectives: On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of atypical development and the effects of disability and other "at risk" factors on the development and learning of preschoolers and students;
  • Demonstrate an ability to interact with preschoolers and students who have a range of needs;
  • Demonstrate an ability to gather information about development using the MAPS process;
  • Demonstrate an increased ability to interact with parents and professionals;
  • Demonstrate an ability to contribute to program planning meetings;
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the individual needs of students, children and their families.
Assessment: Satisfactory completion of 15 days supervised teaching a setting and 7 days professional enhancement workshop (50 per cent) and assignments equivalent to 2, 000 words (50 per cent).
