Subject Overview: Ethical Leadership is the GCALL’s foundation subject, offered as a week-long residential intensive in semester break. It provides doctoral candidates an interdisciplinary breadth and cohort experience, and the opportunity to study the history, principles and practices of ethical leadership. The course will be taught through a mixed mode of seminars, lectures, workshops and case studies, with an emphasis on collaborative learning and team-based problem solving. Topics covered include: an introduction to philosophies of power and leadership from antiquity to the present day; the self in leadership; global sector trends and cultures of leadership across educational, corporate, Government and non-Government organisations; inter-professional relationships in practice
Objectives: Doctoral candidates who complete this subject will be able to:
  • Demonstrate a breadth of knowledge commensurate with the depth of their disciplinary expertise;
  • Demonstrate a familiarity with key thinkers in the history and philosophy of leadership from antiquity to the present day;
  • Demonstrate a knowledge and appreciation of the complex social, ethical and cultural context of leadership;
  • Communicate this understanding effectively through oral and written presentations;
  • Articulate their own personal and social values in this context.
Assessment: One seminar presentation during the intensive and a paper equivalent to 2000 words due 2 weeks after the intensive (30%); one 6000 word reflective essay or journal due 6 weeks after the intensive(70%).
