Subject Overview: The subject focuses on developing students' general and academic language competence to enable them to participate effectively in their studies and to respond to assessment requirements in the latter stages of this and other subjects. It examines common language structures and functions required in academic study, common genre and discourses in academic study, and academic conventions.

The major component of the subject is an overview of basic English teaching grammar and pronunciation. By the end of this subject, participants will have acquired a usable pedagogical grammar of English.

Objectives: This subject aims to ensure that participants have mastered the language content of an English language course by providing:
  • a comprehensive pedagogical grammar of English in all its sub-systems (e.g. syntax, pronunciation and articulation, lexis, functions, etc) ; and
  • opportunities to improve the participants' own English language skills through the formal study of the pedagogical grammar, by using English in their own study program, by practising the academic skills needed for further study, and by developing the specific language forms needed by teachers in the ESL/EFL classroom
