Course Overview: The Master of Engineering Management has been designed to bridge the business knowledge gap between engineering, technology and management.

It equips the Engineer or Scientist with the skills required at management levels of technology based enterprise. It provides the financial, investment evaluation and business skills necessary to operate in diverse areas of technology and in the rapidly expanding and changing market place.

This postgraduate program will enable you to acquire an overview of the legal, commercial, marketing and human issues that a manager needs in a technical environment.
Objectives: That a graduate of the program should have:
  • advanced knowledge of international social systems and the regulatory role that managers of technological enterprises play in society;
  • advanced working skills in the application of computers, software and new technologies relevant to management of technological enterprises;
  • advanced awareness of social, cultural and environmental responsibilities of managers of technological enterprises for sustainable outcomes;
  • a sound attitude for undertaking life-long learning in technical and management fields;
  • a well developed capacity to engage with technical and socio-economic issues in contemporary society;
  • a well developed capacity to understand and participate in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural team environment as either a leader or a technical support specialist.
Course Structure & Available Subjects: The Master of Engineering Management is offered at two entry levels:

200 Point Program

The 200 point program consists of the Graduate Diploma followed by the 100 point Masters (see below). If a student leaves the 200 point program prior to completion, he/she may be awarded either the Certificate or Diploma in Engineering Management if all of the necessary requirements have been satisfactorily completed.

Entry Requirements: 4 year degree in engineering or science including mathematics with an av. grade of at least 70%; a 3 year degree in Engineering or related science with an av. grade of at least 70% & at least 2 years documented relevant work experience; or via pathway.

Language Requirements

International students and students whose prior qualifications are from a university overseas where English is not the official language of instruction and examination need to supply proof of academic English language competency. Proof acceptable to the University includes:

Original evidence of an English Language test score at a sitting within the last 24 months of either:

TOEFL - at least 577 and a TWE of at least 4.5 (paper based) or a TOEFL of at least 233 with an Essay Rating of at least 4.5 (computer based)
or
IELTS - at least 6.5. (A minimum band score of 6 is required in the Academic Writing module).

Entry under a slightly lower Engineering alternative* English Language entry requirement is available as follows:
TOEFL - at least 550, with a TWE of 4 or the computer based TOEFL of at least 213 with an Essay Rating Score of at least 4 and agreeing in writing to undertake and pass an ESL subject in the first semester of study at The University of Melbourne
or
IELTS - at least 6 and agreeing in writing to undertake and pass an ESL subject in the first semester of study at the University of Melbourne.

By prior arrangement a limited number of subjects may be taken from the Faculty of Economics and Commerce, from the Engineering Project Management program, or from elsewhere.
