Subject Overview:	A study of representative works by composers employed in a variety of situations throughout the German-speaking lands, 1700–1750. On completion of the subject students should be able to: comprehend the advantages and constraints of the social and religious contexts in which German composers of the 18th century worked identify and analyse genres used by composers of the Baroque era expand their capacity to identify, select, and apply principles of Baroque practices in music they perform understand the value musicological scholarship brings to musical performance develop the ability to critically evaluate contemporary performance practices of Baroque music.
Assessment:	Written assignment of 2000 words due at the end of semester (60%); written class presentation of 1500 words due during the semester as directed (40%)

Breadth Options:	This subject is a level 2 or level 3 subject and is not available to new generation degree students as a breadth option in 2008. This subject or an equivalent will be available as breadth in the future. Breadth subjects are currently being developed and these existing subject details can be used as guide to the type of options that might be available. 2009 subjects to be offered as breadth will be finalised before re-enrolment for 2009 starts in early October.
