Subject Overview:

This subject builds on the knowledge developed in Health and Human Behaviour, Contemporary Health Care and Health, Nursing and Society. Students will explore in depth the culturally and historically constructed understandings of health and illness in western societies. This exploration will lead into an examination of the principles of health promotion particularly the dimensions of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion. Current medical, behavioural and socio-economic approaches to health promotion will be analysed and critiqued. Students will be introduced to health education within the context of health promotion then in relation to patient education within the health care system. The subject will then assist students to develop planned educational activities designed to improve patient health behaviour using best available evidence.

Subject objectives

At the completion of this subject the student should be able to:

  • demonstrate a beginning understanding of the cultural and historical bases to approaches to health and illness in western society;
  • demonstrate an understanding of the principles of health promotion;
  • demonstrate critical analysis of a variety of health promotional strategies used locally, nationally and internationally.
  • demonstrate an understanding of health education
Assessment: 500-800 word assignment plan (20%)3,000 word assignment (80%)
Prescribed Texts: Specific readings selected by the subject coordinator will be made available to the students at the beginning of the subject either as a book of readings or on counter reserve in the Library or given as handouts throughout the semester.
