Course Overview: The Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Studies (Specific Learning Difficulties) course is designed principally for professional educators who have a four-year undergraduate Bachelor of Education degree or equivalent, and preferably at least one year of professional experience. The Specific Learning Difficulties stream aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to teach children and adolescents with learning disabilities. These subjects enable graduates to meet the requirements for specialist positions in schools.
Objectives: Students completing the Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Studies (Specific Learning Difficulties) should be able to:
  • Deepen their knowledge and extend their understanding in the general area of educational thought and practice in the area of specific learning difficulties;
  • Acquire a substantial understanding of relevant theory, and practice and assessment of students with literacy and numeracy difficulties;
  • Be acquainted with the range of expert writing and research on particular topics;
  • Be eligible, under particular specified conditions, for employment in designated positions with in the Department of Education and Training, Victoria, and in other schools and authorities;
  • Have an ongoing interest in the study and practice of education for students with additional educational needs;
  • Acquire knowledge and understanding in the general area of inclusion or special education;
  • Acquire and extend knowledge on curriculum modification to match the educational needs of students with disabilities and difficulties;
  • Establish a sound basis for further studies in Education at the Master's level.

Entry Requirements: An applicant may be eligible for entry into the Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Studies (Specific Learning Difficulties) if the applicant has:
  • completed an approved degree and an approved teaching qualification or equivalent; or
  • completed an approved four-year teaching degree or equivalent; or
  • completed an approved equivalent qualification which is recognised by the Faculty as evidence of adequate preparation for the course and has a record of professional or teaching experience in a field and at a level acceptable to the Faculty.
