Course Overview:

The graduate diploma is similar to an undergraduate major and offers a comprehensive program in German studies. The course is suitable for general interest or professional development purposes and does not require a research project or thesis. Graduates are provided with a pathway to higher degree study and may qualify for entry, if they receive approval from the Head of Section, to the Postgraduate Diploma in Arts.

Objectives:

Students who complete the graduate diploma should:

  • demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of issues and themes in the field of German studies;
  • attain a level of proficiency in written and spoken German that is commensurate with their entry level of German.
  • acquire the ability to comprehend written and spoken German messages of a moderate to high level of complexity occurring in a variety of multimedia approaches, depending on entry levels of competence;
  • develop a conceptual understanding of language use through a study of functions and grammar;
  • demonstrate an independent approach to learning and knowledge that uses rigorous methods of enquiry and appropriate theories and methodologies that are applied with intellectual honesty and a respect for ethical values;
  • be able to apply critical and analytical skills and methods to the identification and resolutions of problems within a particular area of study.
Course Structure & Available Subjects:
  • a combination of compulsory and elective subjects

Students may choose from three options available in the Graduate Diploma (see below). Those who have completed previous study of the language will normally commence at a higher level, subject to approval by the course coordinator.

Option One

  • Compulsory subjects I & II
  • 3 elective subjects

Total 100 points - subjects are 12.5 points each, unless indicated otherwise.

Option Two

For candidates with four or five years of high school German (or equivalent)

  • Compulsory subjects I & II
  • 3 elective subjects

Total 100 points - subjects are 12.5 points each, unless indicated otherwise.

Option Three

Candidates with a minimum of VCE German (or equivalent) must undertake the following subjects. The course must include one language sequence relevant to the candidate's initial level of linguistic competence (to be tested by course coordinator prior to enrolment).

  • a combination of one sequence (I, II or III) of compulsory and elective subjects

Students undertaking Option Three II or III, who wish to enrol in the Postgraduate Diploma should seek advice from the course coordinator or a Faculty course adviser regarding an appropriate enrolment.

Entry Requirements:

The minimum entry requirement is:

  • an undergraduate degree in any discipline.
