Course Overview:

The graduate diploma is similar to an undergraduate major and offers a comprehensive program in Italian studies. The course is suitable for general interest or professional development purposes and does not involve a research project or thesis. Graduates are provided with a pathway to higher degree study and may qualify for entry, if they receive approval from the Head of Section, to the Postgraduate Diploma in Arts.

Objectives:

Students who complete the graduate diploma should:

  • attain a high level of linguistic competence;
  • acquire the ability to communicate in Italian on a wide range of subjects;
  • develop an understanding and appreciation of various aspects of Italian literature and culture.
Course Structure & Available Subjects:
  • a combination of compulsory and elective subjects
Total 100 points - subjects are 12.5 points each, unless indicated otherwise.

Students may choose from three options available in the Graduate Diploma. Those who have completed previous study of the language will normally commence at a higher level, subject to approval by the course coordinator.

Option One

For candidates with no or very little previous knowledge of Italian.

  • Compulsory subjects A & B
  • 3 elective subjects
Total 100 points - subjects are 12.5 points each, unless indicated otherwise. Option Two For candidates with sufficient previous knowledge of Italian (equivalent to one year of Beginners Italian).
  • Compulsory subjects A & B
  • One elective subject
Total 100 points - subjects are 12.5 points each, unless indicated otherwise. Option Three For candidates with a minimum of VCE Italian (or equivalent).
  • a combination of one sequence (A, B, or C) of compulsory and elective subjects
  • five elective subjects (for sequence A)
  • four elective subjects (for sequences B and C)
Total 100 points - subjects are 12.5 points each, unless indicated otherwise.

The minimum entry requirement is:

  • an undergraduate degree in any discipline.

Notes: This course is designed to be taken over three years on a part-time basis. This will consist of subjects totaling 37.5 points for each of the first two years and 25 points in Third Year. Candidates with no knowledge of the language will commence at the beginners' level (option one). Those who have completed previous study of the language will normally commence at a higher level (option two or option three), subject to approval by the course coordinator.
