Bachelor of Urban Planning and Development

This course is no longer offered. Students who commenced the Bachelor of Urban Planning and Development prior to 2008 should consult with a Course Adviser for enrolment advice.

The Bachelor of Urban Planning and Development is a four-year degree accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia. It is available at both pass and honours levels (students can choose the honours stream at the end of third year). The BUPD is designed to equip graduates with the skills necessary to lead the development of socially just, environmentally sustainable, economically successful cities in Australia and internationally.

• offer professional studies in urban planning leading to accreditation with the Planning Institute of Australia;
• provide students with an analytical understanding of contemporary (and past) urban contexts, within which human intervention has occurred in the management of urban change;
• teach urban planning as an intellectual endeavour and a professional practice based on community obligation, a commitment to collective and diverse interests, and recognition of environmental and ecological constraints;
• provide a focus of study reflecting the needs of the Australian and international professional planning markets.

First Year

121-171 Environmental Change

Semester 2

Students may take either 166-103 Global Politics OR 166-111 Australian Society.

Second Year

Semester 1

Students may take either 166-022 Public Policy Making OR 121-022 Development and Urban Environments.

Third Year

Semester 1

705-345 Planning Law is optional for international students who do not anticipate working in Australia. If international students choose not to undertake it, they should instead take a 12.5 credit point elective.

For Honours, students should take:

• 705-455 Research Project A,
• 705-460 Planning and Urban Policy Studio, plus
• 1-2 of the 5 planning subjects listed below, and
• up to one elective.

For honours, students should take:

• 705-455 Research Project A (continued),
• 705-470 Contemporary Planning Practice, plus
• 1-2 subjects chosen from the 4 planning subjects listed below (except Investigation Program A), and
• up to 1 electives.

Plus one to two of the following:

BUPD Elective Subjects

Electives can be chosen from any Faculty in the University. In fourth year only, electives can include any 3rd or 4th year planning subjects not already chosen.
