Subject Overview:

Students will utilise the knowledge gained in previous subjects in the Avian Health Online program to investigate major disease syndromes including respiratory disease, immunosuppression, neoplasia, production decline and lameness.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • Integrate knowledge of pathology, microbiology and serology, food safety, public health and economics and apply it to major disease syndromes
  • Obtain data from poorly performing flocks and undertake analysis to identify causative factors of poultry diseases
  • Analyse data and assess results to implement cost-effective decisions

Assessment:

Assessment is carried out at the end of each month. Student progress is monitored through class exercises and case studies. The final examination is a three-hour written and online exam held in weeks 16 and 17.

Students will be required to arrange an appropriate venue (e.g. a nearby university) to sit this assessment under supervised examination conditions.

The breakdown of assessment is:

  • Three monthly assessment tests worth a total of 25%
  • One major class assignment worth 10%
  • Class participation worth 5%
  • A three-hour written and online exam to be held during the end-of-semester exam period worth 60%
