Subject Overview:

This subject comprises two modules:

Clinical Practice: Dental materials and the principles and techniques of restorative dentistry in the deciduous and permanent dentition, scaling and root debridement; the prevention of dental caries and periodontal diseases in children, adolescents and young adults and the prevention and management of periodontal disease across all ages.

Specialist areas in Dentistry: Specialist areas of dentistry including periodontics, prosthodontics and paediatric dentistry.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • Examine, diagnose, plan and provide treatment as specified by Dental Practice legislation within Australia for Oral Health Therapy (dental therapy and dental hygiene) ;
  • Critically evaluate responses to treatment provided to patients, identify limitations of particular treatment modalities and adapt care appropriately;
  • Effectively communicate information regarding oral health status, treatment options and potential outcomes to the patient (and their family), oral health and general health care providers as necessary; and
  • Demonstrate effective patient management while respecting the psychosocial, social and cultural differences of individuals.


  • And evaluate various techniques associated with the prevention and conservative management of common oral diseases; and
  • Conditions beyond the scope of dental hygiene and dental therapy and to facilitate appropriate referrals.

Have developed knowledge and skills to:

  • Understand and apply the philosophy of total oral health care and appreciate the relationship of dental therapy and dental hygiene care with the general and specialist dental treatment in the overall care-plan for the patient; and

Work effectively as a team member and to use self-reflection to continuously monitor and improve performance.


  1. One 2-hour written examination at the end of Semester 1 (20%);
  2. One 2-hour written examination at the end of Semester 2 (20%);
  3. Continuing assessment during the year, including pre-clinical and clinical practicum and written reports of no more than 2000 words (30%); and
  4. A final clinical exam and a 20-minute viva voce examination at the end of Semester 2 (30%).

Hurdle requirements:

  1. A pass is required in each of Sections 3 and 4 for an overall pass in this subject.
  2. 75% attendance at Lectures; 100% attendance at Seminars/Tutorials, Pre-Clinical & Clinical Sessions, and Clinical & Case Simulations/Discussions
