This subject has the following teaching availabilities in 2016:

Students will establish a sizeable concert repertory covering all styles, and will be able to show that the ability to manage stress will ensure sound concert presentation. Areas to be covered include advanced study of instrumental or vocal technique and all related aspects of music performance. In addition, classes in the repertoire and materials of the instrument will be held.

In order to contextualise their education within the best practices of local, national and international standards, students are expected to work competently and productively as team members both alone and in groups, for example participation in individual lessons and Concert Class/Orchestral related ensembles. In order to ensure the highest level of performance preparation, 100% attendance is expected.

On completion of the subject, students should be able to:

• conceive, design and implement the creation of a musically coherent recital program;

• demonstrate sustained artistic maturity in the preparation of recital repertoire;

• perform the component works of a program with assured musical understanding;

• sustain a level of instrumental or vocal craft that communicates and enhances the repertoire presented; and

• develop best performance practice skills within individual and/or group settings

Students must prepare a program of approved pieces between 30 - 35 minutes for examination at the end of the year (100%). Programs must be submitted to the coordinator for approval no later than week 8 of the semester.

Hurdle requirements

• Students must participate as a performer (as determined by the coordinator) in concert class, performance class and instrument class as arranged in order to complete the subject.
• 100% participation in concert class, or orchestral related ensemble (for strings, woodwind, brass and percussion) unless approved by the head of area.

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.

Students who have studied this subject should develop and enhance:

• problem solving skills
• skills in critical thinking and self-evaluation.

Students must submit a Practical Examination Program Approval form to the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music no later than the end of week eight of the semester in which the examination is to occur.
