Subject Overview:

This subject provides an overview of key elements of leading and managing international tertiary education, to provide participants with knowledge and insights in areas such as:

  • international context and trends in the globalisation of tertiary education and research;
  • national strategies and policy settings for global engagement by tertiary institutions;
  • institutional motivations, strategies, policies and practices for global engagement in teaching, research and service;
  • metrics, outputs and outcomes of global engagement by tertiary institutions;
  • leadership and management for sustainable global enterprises by tertiary education institutions.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion, participants should be able to apply what they have learned, for example by:

  • assessing the impact of a change in government policy affecting global engagement by tertiary institutions;
  • integrating international perspectives in institutional policy, strategy and programs across the teaching, research and service functions of institutions;
  • identifying and assessing options to enhance successful and sustainable global engagement by their institution;
  • developing a comprehensive strategy and plan to advance global engagement by an institution or by an area or program within an institution;
  • successfully advocating for implementation of a global engagement strategy and plan.


There is one assessment task:

  • A 3000-word written assignment, due at end of subject (100%)

Hurdle requirements:

  • Four online Discussion Board tasks ( 4 x 500-word commentaries on set readings) due every 2 weeks. For any discussion board task submitted late, the task increases to a 1000 word commentary.

NB All hurdle and assessment taasks must be passed.

Attendance at all classes (tutorial/seminars/practical classes/lectures/labs/online classes) is obligatory. Failure to attend 80% of classes will normally result in failure in the subject.
