Subject Overview:

In this subject students undertake a block placement of 24 days in a specific learning disabilities setting. This placement must be undertaken in a different setting to Professional Practice SLD 1 and cannot be undertaken in your workplace. The diagnosis and intervention implemented targets multiple specific learning disability needs, for example, literacy, numeracy and social learning needs. Possible settings can be either segregated or inclusive. The setting provides students with the opportunity to design, implement and evaluate programs for students with special needs. Students will need to attend professional experience workshops/seminars.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Experience first hand working with students with specific learning difficulties and those with disabilities
  • Demonstrate sound skills in behavioural management
  • View educational assessment and specific assessments
  • Show knowledge of relevant support services and communication systems for students with disabilities and impairments
  • Demonstrate an ability to communicate with students with disabilities or impairments
Assessment:

Satisfactory completion of the second professional practice placement. This includes a written report that comprises a statement of the setting's policies and programs and its modus operandi to achieve them; a description of the learning needs of one or more students who have specific learning disabilities; a description of an intervention programme implemented for the student's and a rationale for the choice of methods and strategies used in each session: relevant liaison with the student/s' classroom teacher/s and parents; an evaluation of the effectiveness of the teaching and learning strategies used in the intervention. Completion of the professional experience workshop report (PEW).

Two submissions:

1) a 2,500 word report to be designed and implemented while on placement, and

2) a 2,500 word PEW report according to the description in the Professional Practice Manual.
