Course Overview:

A candidate whose work, in the opinion of the examiners includes a substantial, original contribution to Science; and is of such a standard as to give the candidate authoritative standing in the field of the candidate's study; and who has fulfilled the prescribed conditions; may be admitted to the degree of Doctor of Science.

Course Structure & Available Subjects:

Intending candidates for the degree of Doctor of Science submit three soft-bound copies consisting of reprints (PDF files from the journal are acceptable) of publications and/or papers which will make up the thesis. In addition, an introduction to the works being presented for examination should be submitted with a list of contents. Where the candidate has collaborated with others, a signed statement indicating the content of their share in the work must also be included. Candidates should be able to show that they have been responsible for a significant portion of the research work.



Subject Options:

Once the submission has been approved for examination by the perusal committee, candidates are enrolled in the subject SCIE90001 Doctor of Science and are invoiced as indicated at

Entry Requirements:

As indicated at 11. Doctor of Science on page 10 of Schedule A at

1. The faculty of Science ("faculty") may admit as a candidate for the degree of doctor of Science a graduate, of not less than five years' standing since qualifying for the degree, who is either-

(a) a Bachelor of Science of the University;

(b) a graduate in some other faculty of the University who satisfies the faculty that he or she has had adequate scientific training; or

(c) a graduate of another university or tertiary educational institution who-

  • (i) has been admitted to a degree recognised by the faculty pursuant to section 4 of Regulation 11.1.A2 as appropriate for the purposes of this award;
  • (ii) satisfies the faculty that he or she has had adequate scientific training; and
  • (iii) either - (A) is a member of the academic staff of the University of at least two years' standing; or (B) has had, in the opinion of the faculty, a substantial association with the University.

An applicant for candidature must submit the prescribed number of copies of a thesis, which may consist of published or unpublished work of the applicant.

The faculty must appoint a perusal committee to determine whether the subject matter of the work presented falls within the scope of Science and, if so, whether, in general terms, the quality and quantity of the work presented justifies submitting the work to assessment.
