Graduate Certificate in Education (International Baccalaureate) DP

The Graduate Certificate in Education (International Baccalaureate) DP is a fully online program. It has been designed to broaden teachers' understanding and skills in relation to the philosophy and concepts underlying the International Baccalaureate Programmes including processes, culture and classroom practices.

The DP stream is recommended for teachers wanting to teach in IB schools, or currently teaching in IB schools, and seeking specialised knowledge and advanced qualifications in IB education with a focus on the Diploma Programme. This qualification is recognised by the International Baccalaureate in relation to the IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning.

Students who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Education (International Baccalaureate) DP should be able to:

• Demonstrate the essential knowledge and skills to perform competently as an IB teacher;
• Comprehend the intellectual, social and psychological aspects of their IB work with learners and synthesise theory and practice;
• Understand the key concepts of IB curriculum policy formation and IB curriculum development;
• Evaluate and use constructive criticism of their own work and of the institutions in which they teach;
• Develop theoretical understandings of the International Baccalaureate; and
• Demonstrate an understanding of curriculum delivery modes of the IB as a model for professional learning.

The Graduate Certificate in Education (International Baccalaureate) DP is a a 50 point fully online course.

Students complete four core subjects (50 points of study).

1. In order to be considered for entry, applicants must have completed either:

• an approved degree and an approved teaching qualification; or
• an approved four-year teaching degree; or
• a relevant tertiary degree and documented relevant professional or teaching experience which together demonstrate preparation for the course comparable to an applicant with an approved teaching qualification.

Meeting these requirements does not guarantee selection.

2. In ranking applications, the Selection Committee will consider:

• prior academic performance; and, if relevant
• professional experience

3. The Selection Committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application in accordance with the Academic Board rules on the use of selection instruments.

4. The minimum English language requirements for this course are Band 7.

Assessment may include the outcomes of tasks completed in collaboration with other students.

Graduates may progress to a range of other graduate coursework programs.

Graduates of the Graduate Certificate of Education (International Baccalaureate) DP engage with national and global issues and are attuned to internationalism and cultural diversity. They can apply knowledge and information in classrooms in a range of contexts and are effective oral and written communicators.

Graduates have engaged with contemporary local, national and global issues and developed an understanding of the International Baccalaureate’s mission, purpose and philosphophy. They have a high regard for human rights, social inclusion, ethics and the environment. Graduates of the Graduate Certificate of Education (International Baccalaureate) DP are aware of the social and cultural diversity in communities and can work collaboratively with people from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
