Studio Materials and Methods B

This subject has the following teaching availabilities in 2016:

7 hours per week

This subject addresses and introduces students to the field of contemporary art practice through a series of set projects that will explore the basic materials, methods and concepts of sculpture and digital and installation art forms. Developed specifically for Graduate Certificate students, this subject will focus on traditional techniques and methodologies as well as exploring other related media, technologies and processes.

This subject will:

• assist students to extend and inform their individual art practice through undertaking studies in different and/or complimentary artistic media and processes.

• assist with the development of confidence in articulation of ideas and critical analysis of work produced.

Assessment is based on a substantial folio of work demonstrating the range of a student’s activities during the semester. The folio will consist of work made for set exercises/projects, and related materials (100%).

Ongoing feedback is provided to students via individual and group tutorials. A mid-semester review will also take place, taking into account the student's progress against the following criteria: course engagement; work development.
Formal feedback is given to students who are deemed to be at risk. (week 6-8)

Hurdle Requirement: is 80% class attendance is required for the folio and exhibition component to be considered for assessment purposes.

Incidental Fees will apply for the purpose of accessing the workshop and purchase of materials as relevant.

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.

On the completion of this subject students will be able to:

• demonstrate a good understanding of the national and international challenges for the professional visual artist in the 21st century, including a willingness to engage with artistic imagination, creativity, transformation and interpretation;

• demonstrate capacities for material and methodological understanding in the basic areas of sculpture and digital art forms;

• demonstrate an open, independent and inquiring attitude towards contemporary cultural developments and new ideas.
