Subject Overview:

This subject builds participants’ knowledge of the fundamental principles and practice of quality teaching, learning and assessment within tertiary education settings. Through a series of lectures, seminars and workshops, the subject provides an introduction to quality assurance frameworks, with a particular focus on the role of assessment for assuring quality and improving teaching and learning within higher level AQF courses. It draws upon the participants’ experiences as well as research on quality approaches, policies and measures used within tertiary education settings.
Learning Outcomes:

At completion of the subject, participants should have developed:

  • a critical understanding of the principles of quality teaching, learning and assessment in tertiary education;
  • knowledge of some of the key policies relating to quality teaching and assessment at this level, and the central debates in this field;
  • an understanding of the strengths and limitations of quality assurance approaches and frameworks used within tertiary education settings;
  • a student-centred perspective on the nature of assessment for teaching and learning purposes;
  • skills in the design of assessment tasks and scoring rubrics for informing and improving teaching and student learning in tertiary education sectors.
Assessment:
  • 2,500 word essay, due mid semester, 50%
  • 2,500 word essay, due end of semester, 50%

Hurdle requirement: This subject has a minimum hurdle requirement of 80% attendance at all tutorials, seminars and workshops.
