Overview:

English and Theatre Studies is a combined program and students can specialise in either areas. If offers studies in imaginative writing and dramatic performance, focusing on their form, content, traditions and practices and on the myriad ways they engage with the everyday world. The program offers subjects in a wide range of areas, from the Medieval and Early Modern to Romanticism, Modernism, and contemporary literature and performance. This includes British, Australian, American and postcolonial writing and theatre, and literary, cultural and performance theory. English and Theatre Studies at the University of Melbourne are recognised nationally and internationally for innovative teaching, scholarship and research.

Learning Outcomes:

Students who complete the specialisation should have acquired the following skills and competencies:

  • an introductory knowledge of the main periods and trends in English and/English and Theatre studies;
  • an introductory knowledge of key critical methods in English and/English and Theatre studies;
  • general skills in the analysis of literary and/or dramatic texts, genres, histories, cultures and performances; and
  • general skills in research, writing, and thinking critically about creative texts and performances.
Structure & Available Subjects:

Duration: 1 years full-time / 2 years part-time

A specialisation in English and Theatre Studies in the Graduate Diploma of Arts consists of:

  • three compulsory subjects (37.5 points)
  • elective subjects (62.5 points)

Total 100 points

Please note: students cannot take more than 12.5 points at first-year level
