Prerequisites:

Completion of 25 points of Level 1 Sociology, and 37.5 points of Level 2 Sociology (including MULT20003), and 37.5 points of Level 3 Sociology (including SOCI30001).

SOCI30001 and the Internship can be taken concurrently.

An application process applies. Permission from the Internships coordinator is required prior to enrolling in an internship subject. Subject Overview:

In this subject a student, under academic supervision, undertakes a sociological research project or prepares a portfolio of work in an organisation outside the university, such as a trade union, social movement, women's organisation, social service provider, government or non-government organisation or business organisation. The project will be determined jointly by the student and the organisation concerned.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this subject students should:

  • Apply disciplinary knowledge in the context of being placed at a host organisation and being immersed in its culture;
  • Have well-developed communicative, analytical, research and writing skills and be able to critically evaluate evidence;
  • Have practical and professional skills and ethics enabling the provision of future consultancy-type research services;
  • Have high-level interpersonal, written and oral skills developed through interaction in various contexts and with a range of people.

Assessment:

A Research Report or professional portfolio of 6,000 words (80%), and a Critical Reflection of 2,000 words (20%). Both pieces of assessment are due during the examination period.

Hurdle Requirement: Mid-semester progress report and a supervisor assessment report.

Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per working day. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.

Notes:

Entry to this subject is by application as a quota of 16 students applies. Applications are made online through the School of Social and Political Sciences in the semester prior to the one in which the internship is to occur. The application due date is the last day of the examination period in the semester prior to intended enrolment.

The Sociology Internship is not available as a Breadth subject and is only available to students who are completing a major in Sociology.
