Subject Overview:

This subject aims to provide students an overview of the current Japanese writing system, consisting of three types of script, kanji, hiragana and katakana. Students will learn the historical backgrounds of these types of script, and learn the current structural and functional characteristics of each type of script in writings by analysing how it is used in writings. Students will ahve opportunities to observe the recent chnages in the use of the script and other signs and symbols, and analyse their functions in relation to other words. Students who complete this subject will gain knowledge of Japanese words, and developskills for the accurate comprehension and appropriate reproduction of the words in reading and writing.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this subject, students should:

acquire in-depth knowledge of different aspects of the target language and language education;
develop sensitivity to implied meanings from given texts, and be able to relate them with a certain choice of words, sentence structure and cohesive discourse;
communicate and exchange their views in Japanese with other students of linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds;
conduct group research activities using emerging technologies;
engage in meaningful discourse with students in Japan;
write an opinion piece based on findings from group project work.


Class participation 10%, written work totalling 1600 words 40% (due throughout the semester) and a final examination 50% (due during the examination period).

Class attendance is required for this subject; if you do not attend a minimum of 80% of classes without an approved exemption you will not be eligible for a pass in this subject. Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
