Subject Overview:

This subject offers students the opportunity to engage with recent as well as historical debates and research findings in the field of German Studies. In particular it focuses on aspects of German in a global world involving transnational, cross-cultural, intergenerational or transhistorical perspectives. Examples of topics that may be covered are German-speaking communities outside Germany; multicultural Germany; patterns of German migration and emigration; Germany, Austria and Switzerland on the European and international stage; German speakers in Australia, past and present; intergenerational legacies from the Nazi and communist eras.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this subject students should have:

  • developed an in-depth knowledge of several contemporary or historical topics in the German-speaking world involving transnational, cross-cultural, intergenerational or transhistorical perspectives;
  • engaged intellectually with cultural, social and linguistic issues facing the German language and German-speakers in a global world;
  • demonstrated an ability to process and communicate information effectively about the place of German in global contexts;
  • demonstrate a deep appreciation of the value of cultural diversity and of other cultures.
Assessment:
  • Individual class presentation (10 minutes, equivalent to 1,000 words), due during semester (20%)
  • Literature review (equivalent to 1,000 words), due mid-semester (20%)
  • Research essay (equivalent to 3,000 words), due at the end of semester (60%)
